Heat pumps are 3 x more efficient than gas boilers

Heat your home efficiently and reduce your environmental impact with a heat pump. The Energy Saving Trust suggest there is a 70% carbon reduction when you compare with a traditional gas boiler. A heat pump takes heat at a low temperature from the air or ground, increases that heat to a higher temperature and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water.

Government grants available

Air source heat pumps

Extracting energy from the air

Air source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air around the external unit, a large fan sucks the air across a heat exchanger filled with refrigerant, which is at a lower temperature than the surrounding air. The refrigerant harvests this heat and transfers it to a compressor where it is pressurised to create higher levels of heat. It is these higher temperatures which heat the house or hot water.

Air source units can be connected to oversized radiators, to permit lower flow temperatures and increased efficiencies, underfloor heating and suitably designed hot water cylinders. In general they are around 300% efficient and can save approximately 30% in comparison with natural gas and 50-70% when compared with oil or LPG.

Air source installation costs are lower than ground source, but the lifecycle costs are higher due to the increased wear on the outdoor unit, efficiencies are very broadly similar but ground source is still slightly better.

Ground source heat pumps

Heat pumps draw energy from below

Ground source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the earth via a network of pipes laid in the ground or inserted into bore holes. A glycol mixture is circulated through the network at a lower temperature to the earth around it. The refrigerant harvests this heat and transfers it to a compressor where it is pressurised to create higher levels of heat. It is these higher temperatures which heat the house or hot water.

Ground source units can be connected to oversized radiators, to permit lower flow temperatures and increased efficiencies, underfloor heating and suitably designed hot water cylinders. In general they are around 300% efficient and can save approximately 30% in comparison with natural gas and 50-70% when compared with oil or LPG.
